My advisees have diverse backgrounds and research interests. However, most of our research focuses on the modeling, analysis, design, and synthesis of embedded systems. I generally list an advisee on the website after the first noteworthy accomplishment, e.g., an completed project and published research paper or commercial product.

Current advisees with significant research contributions

David Bild's photograph David Bild is a Ph.D. student working on temperature-aware integrated circuit design, synthesis, and testing. He joined our research group in Fall 2007. He has a Bachelor's degree at the EECS Department of Northwestern University. David's work with the group has resulted in three conference papers [1, 2, 3]. Lide Zhang's photograph Lide Zhang is a Ph.D. student who is working on power modeling and optimization, as well as temperature- and variation-aware modeling of integrated circuits. She joined our group in Fall 2007. She holds a Bachelor's degree at the Microelectronics Department of Tsinghua University in Beijing. Her work with the group has resulted in three conference papers [1, 2, 3].
Yun Xiang's photograph Yun Xiang is a Ph.D. student who is working on personalized air quality sensing and analysis as well as modeling and optimizing integrated circuit reliability. He joined our group in Fall 2008. He holds a Master's degree from the University of Massachusetts and a Bachelor's degree from Zhejiang University. His work with the group has resulted in two conference papers [1, 2]. Yue Liu's photograph Yue Liu is a Ph.D. student who is working on secure communication technologies that are resistant to monitoring and censorship. She joined our group in Fall 2008. She holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China. Her work with the group has resulted in one conference paper [1].

Graduated advisees

Lei Yang's photograph Doctor Lei Yang completed her Ph.D. degree requirements in Summer 2008. She worked on a wide range of embedded system design topics including data compression, memory hierarchy design, and user satisfaction driven power management. She joined the group in Fall 2003. She holds a Bachelor's degree from Peking University in Beijing as well as Master's and Ph.D. degrees from Northwestern University. She took a research position with Google. Lei Yang's work with the group has resulted in five conference papers [1, 2, 3, 4, 5], five journal papers [6, 7, 8, 9, 10] and a patent disclosure [11]. She won a Graduate School Presidential Fellowship, the most prestigious fellowship for senior Northwestern Ph.D. and MFA students. Her work also won a Computerworld Horizon Award for high-impact commercially-used information technology. Zhenyu Gu's photograph Doctor Zhenyu Gu completed his Ph.D. requirements in Fall 2007. He worked on power-aware and temperature-aware design automation of integrated circuits and systems. He holds a Master's degree from Fudan University in Shanghai. Zhenyu took a job with Synplicity. His collaboration with the group continues. Zhenyu's work with the group has resulted in six conference papers [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6] and three journal papers [7, 8, 9].
Xi Chen's photograph Doctor Xi Chen completed his Ph.D. degree requirements in Summer 2011. He worked on a wide range of energy efficient computing and security problems, including integrated circuit thermal analysis, energy-efficient task assignment and power management state control for heterogeneous workloads, and embedded system security. He holds a Bachelor's degree from Tsinghua University. Xi Chen's work with the group has resulted in eight conference papers [ 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 ] and one journal paper [9]. One of his publications won a best paper award from the Design, Automation, and Test in Europe Conference. Lan Bai's photograph Doctor Lan Bai completed her Ph.D requirements in Summer 2011. She worked on a embedded system design and synthesis, with a focus on developing language, compiler, and run-time system technologies to make wireless sensing system implementation accessible to application experts who are not computer experts. She holds a Bachelor's degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei. Lan Bai's work with the group has resulted in four conference papers [1, 2, 3, 4] and one journal paper [5].
Tam Chantem's
photograph Doctor Tam Chantem was a Ph.D student in Prof. Xiaobo Sharon Hu's research group at the Notre Dame University. She collaborated with our group on temperature-aware and reliable real-time system design. She is now a professor at Utah State University. Her work in collaboration with our group has resulted in four conference papers [1, 2, 3, 4] and one journal paper [5]. David Zaretsky's
photograph Doctor David Zaretsky completed his Ph.D. degree. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to co-advise him during the last few years of his graduate study. His primary advisor was Prof. Prithviraj Banerjee. David Zaretsky is the Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Binachip. His work with the group resulted in three conference papers [1, 2, 3] and a book chapter [4].
Stephen Tarzia's
photograph Doctor Stephen Tarzia completed his Ph.D. requirements in Summer 2011. He worked primarily on audio environment embedded system localization. He holds a Bachelor's degree from Columbia University in New York. He won the Graduate School's Dr. John N. Nicholson Fellowship. He joined the group in Fall 2006. Professor Peter Dinda. When I moved to the University of Michigan, Stephen remained at Northwestern University and Professor Peter Dinda became his advisor. I co-advised. Stephen's work with the group has resulted in three conference papers [ 1, 2, 3 ] as well as numerous demos and software applications. Jack Cosgrove's
photograph Mr. Jack Cosgrove completed his Master's degree requirements in Spring 2008. He worked on user-centered computing. He holds a Bachelor's degree from Northwestern University. After graduating, Jack took a job with Neurobehavioral Systems. He is currently with higi. Jack's work with the group resulted in one conference paper [1].
Seunghoon Kim's
photograph Seunghoon Kim completed his Master's degree in Spring 2006 for his work on eliminating voltage regulation circuitry from embedded systems. His research collaboration with the group continues. Dean Lawrence Henschen served as his academic advisor. Prof. Russ Joseph and I served as his research advisors. He took a job with LG. Seunghoon's work with the group has resulted on one conference paper [1]. Ai-Hsin Liu's
photograph Ai-Hsin Liu joined the group in Fall 2005 and completed her Master's degree in Fall 2006. Her research collaboration with the group continues. Ai-Hsin is working on embedded chip-level multiprocessor modeling and simulation. She holds a Bachelor's degree from National Chiao Tung University in HsinChu. She took a job with Marvell Technology Group. Ai-Hsin's work with the group has resulted in one conference paper [1].
Sasha Jevtic's
photograph Sasha Jevtic was affiliated with the group from Fall 2005 until Spring 2006. He is currently employed by Motorola. He holds Bachelor's and Master's degrees from Northwestern University. His work with the group resulted in one conference paper [1]. Aaron Beach's
photograph Aaron Beach completed his Bachelor's degree. He is now with Prof. Rick Han's research group at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Brian Wedel completed a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering. He took a job with OpNet in Bethesda, Maryland. John Marszalek completed his Master's degree in Computer Engineering, building upon his Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering. Upon graduating, he took a Design Engineer position with Parker Hannifin and is now a hardware engineer at Edo Nexgen.
